RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Freshman Tony Ukkelberg led the North Dakota State men's decathletes on the opening day of competition at the UC Riverside Spring Track Classic on Thursday.
Ukkelberg scored 3,512 points through the first five events of the decathlon, standing in second place overall behind Paul Afflitto of Wisconsin's score of 3,549.
Bison sophomore Ryan Enerson is in fourth place with 3,486 points, junior Matt Neururer stands in fifth at 3,473, senior Angus Stoudt is sixth with 3,368, and junior Matt Moberg is in seventh with 3,351.
Ukkelberg posted the top mark in the decathlon field in the long jump, leaping 22-05.25 (6.84m). He was third-best in the shot put at 43-02.75 (13.18m) and fourth-fastest in the 100m with a time of 11.44 seconds.
Enerson ran a personal-best 51.71 in the 400m dash to end the day, and Neururer clocked 49.74 for the second-fastest time of his career.
The UC Riverside Spring Track Classic will continue on Friday and Saturday.
