AZUSA, Calif. – North Dakota State junior Matt Neururer led the group of Bison decathletes competing at the California Invitational on Wednesday, Apr. 12. With five events contested on the first day of the decathlon, the final five events will be completed on Thursday at Azusa Pacific University.
Neururer (Motley, Minn.) leads the six Bison men competing in the decathlon after scoring 3,616 points on the first day. NDSU sophomore Ryan Enerson totaled 3,563 points, freshman Tony Ukkelberg has 3,493, and freshman Ben Klimpke scored 3,441.
NDSU senior Angus Stoudt has 3,398 points, and sophomore Matt Moberg scored 3,186 through five events.
Neururer opened the day with a career-best 100m time of 11.34 seconds, then followed up with outdoor personal-bests in the long jump and shot put. He capped Day 1 with an impressive 49.44 in the 400m dash.
Klimpke posted a pair of significant performances: a clocking of 11.23 seconds in the 100m and a leap of 23-00.75 (7.03m) in the long jump.
The California Invitational decathlon will conclude on Thursday, and the majority of the NDSU men's squad will compete at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate meet hosted by Long Beach State.
