TORRANCE, Calif. – North Dakota State junior Brant Gilbertson recorded a personal-best time in the 3000m steeplechase by nine seconds at the Mt. SAC Relays on Thursday evening, highlighting the day of competition for the Bison men's track & field team at a trio of meets in southern California.
Gilbertson clocked 8:58.16 in the steeplechase to climb to fourth on the NDSU all-time list. He placed seventh among Division I runners in the section and may have run fast enough to qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in late May. In each of the past two seasons, 9:00 was the final time accepted into the NCAA Prelims meet in the steeplechase.
NDSU junior Steffan Stroh won the hammer throw title at Long Beach State's Pacific Coast Intercollegiate meet, posting a throw of 203-2 (61.94m). Alex Renner also topped 200 feet, throwing 201-0 (61.28m) for second place. Senior Conrad Schwarzkopf registered a season-best toss of 193-9 (59.07m).
Schwarzkopf later registered his second season-best performance of the day, taking third place in the shot put at 57-06.50 (17.54m). Stroh also finished ninth in the discus with a throw of 171-8 (52.33m).
Bison junior Landon Jochim was the runner-up in the 400m at Long Beach State, clocking 47.88 in windy conditions. Jacob Richter finished fifth in 48.52.
In the 400m hurdles, NDSU took fourth and fifth with Aron Klos (54.22) and Brian Ferry (55.04).
Junior Matt Neururer scored a career-best 6,821 points to win the 'B' section of the California Invitational decathlon in Azusa, Calif. He registered personal-bests in the 100m, long jump, shot put and 1500m over the course of the meet.
Senior Angus Stoudt posted the second-best decathlon score of his career, finishing with 6,712 points. Sophomore Ryan Enerson scored 6,701.
Several Bison athletes will compete at the Mt. SAC Relays in Torrance, Calif., on Friday, and the team will return to Long Beach State for the Beach Invitational on both Friday and Saturday.
