SACRAMENTO, Calif. – North Dakota State University alum and current NDSU volunteer assistant coach Riley Dolezal won his second American title in the javelin on Saturday afternoon, taking first place at the USA Track & Field Championships.
Dolezal unleashed a throw of 268-3 (81.77m) on his second attempt to win the competition by nearly seven feet. It was the second-best throw of Dolezal's career, behind only the 273-11 (83.50m) that won him the 2013 USA championship.
This was the fifth consecutive year that Dolezal finished in the top three at the USATF Championships. He now ranks 31st in the world this year.
A Stanley, N.D., native, Dolezal throws professionally for Nike and serves as a volunteer assistant coach for NDSU. He won the USATF title in the javelin in 2013 and was the national runner-up in 2014 and 2015 before placing third last year. Dolezal represented Team USA at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, Russia, and at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, China.
To qualify for the 2017 World Championships in London, England, Dolezal will either need to remain in the top 32 in the world this year, or reach the automatic qualifying mark of 83.00m before July 23.
Dolezal is coached by NDSU associate head coach Justin St. Clair.
