FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State men's track & field team opened up a slight lead on the first day of the Summit League Indoor Championships as the Bison attempt to win their third consecutive team title.

Through five events completed on Friday, NDSU leads the team standings with 62 points. South Dakota is in second with 53, and South Dakota State is third with 48.

The Bison men brought home a first-place finish in the distance medley relay with the squad of freshman
Jakob Hanna, senior
Aron Klos, junior
Byrne Curl and redshirt freshman
Alex Bartholomay running 10:11.69 – ninth-fastest in school history. Bartholomay pulled away from South Dakota State on the final lap to secure the victory for NDSU.

The NDSU men scored big in the weight throw with a 2-4-5-6-7 finish, led by senior
Steffan Stroh as the runner-up. Senior
Jacob McBride finished fourth and moved up to seventh all-time at NDSU with his throw of 63-07.75 (19.40m).
Alex Talley was fifth, and freshman
Trevor Otterdahl took sixth and now ranks 10th in NDSU history at 62-03.75 (18.99m).

The Bison men finished 3-4-5 in the 3000m with
Camron Roehl (8:25.69),
Elliott Stone (8:26.06) and
Jake Leingang (8:26.88). Roehl now ranks 10th all-time at NDSU in the event.

NDSU freshman
Brandon Lewis registered a huge personal-best in the long jump, placing third at 24-04.50 (7.43m) and entering the NDSU all-time top 10 list at No. 5. Sophomore
Ben Klimpke recorded a personal-best of his own, going 23-09.00 (7.24m) for fifth place.

Noah Shafer placed sixth in the pole vault, clearing a personal-best 16-00.75 (4.90m).

Bison sophomore
Tony Ukkelberg is the heptathlon leader with a first-day personal-best score of 3,225 points. The Bison are standing 1-2-3-5 in the heptathlon after Day 1, with
Matt Neururer (3,006) and Klimpke (2,939) also on pace to set new high scores.

The Bison men claimed four of the eight qualifying spots for the Summit League 800m final with
Jonah Warwick,
Tim Heikkila, Curl and
Brant Gilbertson all advancing.

Ryan Enerson (8.31) and
Dominic Martinez (8.32) both advanced to Saturday's final in the 60m hurdles, with Martinez's prelim time being a new personal-best.

Lewis clocked his second-fastest 60m dash of the season, qualifying to the final in 6.88 seconds.

Action resumes inside the Shelly Ellig Indoor Track & Field Facility with the men's heptathlon at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Field events start at 11:30 a.m. with the women's triple jump, and running events begin at 1 p.m.
