SACRAMENTO, Calif. – It only took until the first throw of the day for the North Dakota State men's track & field team to make some noise at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds on Thursday.
Senior Jacob McBride – ranked 42nd out of 48 competitors in the hammer throw entering the meet – launched a career-best throw of 209-9 (63.95m) on his first attempt of the competition, surpassing his previous best by more than nine feet. McBride's mark turned out to be the best in the first of three flights, and then he had to wait for nearly two hours to see if it would remain in the top 12 to earn a spot at the NCAA Championships.
McBride ultimately finished 11th, claiming a spot in Eugene for his first NCAA Championships appearance. He moved up to fourth all-time at NDSU in the hammer throw.
McBride becomes the seventh NDSU men's outdoor NCAA qualifier in a throwing event in the past four seasons.
Bison senior Steffan Stroh finished 17th in the hammer throw with a mark of 207-1 (63.13m). Stroh will compete in the shot put Saturday.
The NDSU men continue competition at the NCAA West Prelims on Friday, with Payton Otterdahl in the discus and Brant Gilbertson in the 3,000m steeplechase.
