EUGENE, Ore. – North Dakota State throwers Alyssa Olin and Maddy Nilles proved they belong among the nation's best on Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
They also proved they deserved spots on the awards stand.
Olin finished fifth in the javelin, and Nilles took fifth place in the hammer throw as both garnered first-team All-America honors for the first time in their careers.
Olin, a senior from Mott, N.D., registered a throw of 180-6 (55.02m) on her fifth of six attempts in the javelin. Her fifth-place finish is an improvement over her 12th-place finish a year ago.
"The mindset coming into this year was to do better than I did last year, but the expectations got a lot higher after my first meet in Arizona when I threw 58 (meters)," Olin said. "I would've loved to have thrown that again today, but unfortunately I didn't."
Nilles, a junior from Sherrill, Iowa, launched a school-record 218-1 (66.49m) on her final attempt in the hammer, climbing the leaderboard for a fifth-place finish. She entered the meet with the eighth-best mark among the field this season.
"It's a dream come true," said Nilles. "I was just happy to be here, but to come in and PR on the big stage and get fifth is awesome."
"Words can't explain. To earn first team All-American – it makes all the hard work seem easy," Nilles said.
The NDSU women now have 14 top-eight finishes at the NCAA Division I Championships (indoor and outdoor combined) since becoming eligible in 2009. Thursday's performances netted NDSU's first Division I first-team All-America honors in a women's throwing event.
Olin ends the collegiate season at No. 2 on the national performance list, behind only Stanford's Mackenzie Little, who won the NCAA title Thursday with a throw of 198-0 (60.36m).
"It means a lot to me," Olin reflected. "I love representing NDSU, and I love throwing javelin. So to be able to do both for a school that has done nothing but support me feels really good."
"I've loved being a Bison for the past four years. I'm sad it's done, but I'm excited for the next step."
In men's action on Friday, Bison junior Payton Otterdahl will compete in the discus.
