FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State University track & field teams are introducing a new fan-friendly event to the indoor schedule this season, hosting the Bison Team Cup this Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Shelly Ellig Indoor Track & Field Facility on campus.
NDSU will welcome the University of Wyoming and the University of Northern Iowa to Fargo for a three-team, scored meet. The meet is exclusive to Wyoming, UNI and NDSU, with the winning team earning the Bison Team Cup trophy.
Teams are allowed to score their top two placewinners in each event, with each team guaranteed a minimum of two competitors in the fastest heat on the track and the best flight in the field. With six places scoring team points, scoring will be 9-7-5-4-3-2.
Because of the limited entries and the team-centric format, the meet has been compressed into an approximately four-hour time window. The men's weight throw is the first event at 10:30 a.m., with the long jump, pole vault, and high jump starting at 11 a.m. Running events will begin at 12:30 p.m. and be concluded before 3 p.m.
The UNI men are coming off a Missouri Valley Conference outdoor team championship last season, while the Panther women finished third indoor and fourth outdoor last year in the MVC.
Wyoming took sixth on the men's side and ninth in the women's team race at last year's Mountain West Indoor Championships.
The women's events will feature Wyoming All-American jumper Ja'la Henderson, who is currently ranked fifth in the country in the long jump (20-7) and ninth nationally in the triple jump (41-9). Northern Iowa brings senior sprinter Maddie McCalla, who is ranked 25th in the NCAA after running 55.57 in the indoor 400m this past weekend.
On the men's side, Northern Iowa's Evan Long (48.10) and Sven Van Den Bergh (48.12) both rank in the NCAA's top 20 this year in the 400m. William Nolan of Wyoming is in the nation's top 25 in the long jump (24-4) and triple jump (49-8).
