FARGO, N.D.—North Dakota State claimed eight of 10 bouts including the last six in a row to defeat Northern Colorado 30-7 in a Big12 Conference dual before 583 hardy spectators in the Scheels Center on Sunday, Jan. 27. The dual started at 285 pounds.
NDSU (8-5, 3-3 #Big12WR) is scheduled to host Utah Valley (8-7, 0-1 #Big12WR) in a Big 12 Conference at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1.
North Dakota State 197-pounder Cordell Eaton (15-7, 8-5), a redshirt junior from Long Grove, Iowa, recorded a takedown with 35.6-seconds left in the first extra period for a 3-1 sudden victory-1 decision over No. 17-ranked Jacob Seely (11-5, 7-3) to close out the dual. It was the first extra-time win of the season for Eaton and second over a nationally-ranked opponent. He lost 6-5 to Seely in the opening round of the 2018 Big 12 tournament in the only other meeting between the two.
NDSU heavyweight Brandon Metz (12-10, 3-8) opened with a 6-3 decision over Robert Winters, but Northern Colorado (4-7, 0-5 #Big12WR) made things interesting with a 14-4 major decision from No. 17-ranked Rico Montoya over Paul Bianchi at 125.
No. 17-ranked Cam Sykora (17-5, 9-3) made it 8-3 Bison with a 16-0 tech fall at 5:00. It was Sykora's first tech fall since the South Beach Duals, eighth of the season and 32nd in his career.
However, the Bears cut the deficit to 8-7 on Chris Sandoval's 6-2 decision over Sawyer Degen.
North Dakota State began to roll, picking up bonus points in three of the final six bouts, starting with a 15-4 major decision by Jaden Van Maanen (14-9, 7-6) over Dante Rodriguez at 149 pounds. Luke Weber (7-2, 3-1) followed with a workmanlike 8-2 decision over Jordan Robison.
No. 21-ranked 165-pounder Andrew Fogarty (14-3, 11-2) recorded his second straight tech fall and third of the season with a punishing 16-1 win at 4:45.
