The Bowerman
NEW ORLEANS – North Dakota State senior thrower
Payton Otterdahl is one of 10 men named to the watch list for the 2019 Bowerman Award – the highest individual honor in collegiate track & field.
The mid-indoor season watch list was released Thursday, Feb. 7, by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), highlighting the men expected to be the most dominant during the 2019 season.
Otterdahl is the first athlete from North Dakota State to appear on the prestigious watch list.
Otterdahl made history at the Mark Colligan Memorial in Lincoln, Neb., on Jan. 26. He became just the third man in collegiate history to launch the shot put 71 feet indoors. His mark of 21.64m (71-0) stands as the third-best effort in collegiate history behind the joint record of 21.73m (71-3½) held by Ryan Crouser and Ryan Whiting. Otterdahl is also the national leader in the weight throw with a heave of 23.68m (77-8¼).
He continues to stand atop the world leaderboard in the shot put this year.
The next update to the watch list will be released on Feb. 28, following conference championship meets and prior to the NCAA Indoor Championships.
