PHOENIX, Ariz. - Sophomore Van Holmgren is tied for third after the opening day of the Grand Canyon Invitational, as the North Dakota State men's golf team is in eighth as a team.
Holmgren shot a 69 in the first round and followed that with a career-best 67 in the second round. Holmgren is tied for third with a 136 after the opening day. Holmgren had three birdies in the first round, while adding four more in the second round.
Andrew Israelson shot a 71 in the first round and a 69 in the second round, as he is tied for 16th with a 140 for the two rounds. Israelson had eight birdies on the day, including five in the second round. Lucas Johnson had rounds of 73 and 71, as he sits in a tie for 44th after the first day with a 144. Johnson had six birdies on the day, finishing with five on the back nine of the second round.
Nate Deziel shot a 73 in the first round and a 75 in the second round, as he is in a tie for 75th with a 148 for the two rounds. Deziel had a pair of birdies in each round. Will Holmgren shot a 79 in the opening round and a 76 in the second round, as he sits in a tie for 104th with a 155 for the two rounds. W. Holmgren had three birdies in the second round.
The Bison had two players entered as individuals in the meet. Jed Baranczyk is tied for 81st after rounds of 74 and 75, as he finished with a 149 for the two rounds. Jamie Stewart from Missouri has the lead at eight-under after the first day, but still has a hole to finish in the second round on Saturday morning.
The final round gets underway at 10 a.m. (Central) on Saturday, March 16, at Grand Canyon Golf Course in Phoenix, Ariz. One group will have the final hole of the second round to finish before the start of the final round for all players.
