Otterdahl Extends NDSU Discus Record in Season Opener

TEMPE, Ariz. – North Dakota State senior Payton Otterdahl broke his own discus school record in the first outdoor meet of the year, throwing 196-8 (59.96m) to win the Baldy Castillo Invitational hosted by Arizona State on Saturday.
Otterdahl's mark would have finished in the top five at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in each of the past two years.
A majority of NDSU's track & field athletes competed at the IMG Academy Invitational in Bradenton, Fla., on Saturday. Bison redshirt freshman Brandon Lewis opened his outdoor season by winning the long jump, leaping 24-00.75 (7.33m) to tie him for 10th all-time at NDSU in the event.
Bison senior J.T. Butler won the 200m dash (21.80) and finished second in the 100m dash (10.85) at the IMG Invitational.
Senior Kelle'Mon Hinton and sophomore Marcus Walton finished 1-2 in the triple jump. Hinton posted a mark of 48-05.50 (14.77m), and Walton registered a personal-best of 48-01.75 (14.67m). Walton also won the high jump in the morning, clearing 6-09.50 (2.07m).
Bison junior Elliott Stone ran a personal-best 1:55.97 to win the 800m at the IMG Invitational, and freshman Beau Brannan was second in 1:56.91.
Three Bison men went under 49 seconds in the season opener for the 400m dash. Senior Jacob Richter won in 48.19, sophomore Cody Roder was second in 48.51, and freshman Jacob Rodin took third in 48.86. It was the second-fastest outdoor 400m of Richter's career.
Sophomore Connor Wendel won the 400m hurdles in 53.78 – the second-fastest time of his career. Bison senior Ryan Enerson won the 110m hurdles, crossing the line in 14.83 seconds.
Tim Heikkila (3:54.68) took first in the 1500m at the IMG Invitational, and Stone (3:56.16) was the runner-up.
Sophomore Noah Shafer cleared 15-07.75 (4.77m) to win the pole vault at the IMG Invitational.
NDSU redshirt freshman Benji Phillips placed fifth in his collegiate javelin debut, throwing 201-5 (61.40m) at Arizona State.
