FRISCO, Texas - North Dakota State linebacker Jackson Hankey won the NCAA Elite 90 Award presented Friday, Jan. 10, at the NCAA Division I Football Championship banquet at Toyota Stadium.
The award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average at each of the NCAA's 90 national championships. Hankey, a sophomore from Park River, N.D., has a 4.0 GPA in agricultural economics.
An award founded by the NCAA, the Elite 90 recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.
Hankey, NDSU's leading tackler with 110 stops including 9.0 tackles for loss, was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® second team in December by a vote of the College Sports Information Directors of America. He made the Missouri Valley Football Conference all-academic first team.
No. 1-ranked North Dakota State (15-0) plays in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Game against No. 2-ranked James Madison (14-1) at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at Toyota Stadium live on ABC.
