FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State University track & field teams are bringing the fan-friendly Bison Team Cup back to the indoor schedule this season, hosting the event this Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Shelly Ellig Indoor Track & Field Facility on campus.
NDSU will welcome Utah State, South Dakota, and Northern Iowa to Fargo for an exclusive, four-team, scored meet. The winning men's and women's teams will earn the Bison Team Cup trophies.
Teams are allowed to score their top two placewinners in each event, with each team guaranteed a minimum of one competitor in the fastest heat on the track and two competitors in the best flight in the field. With eight places scoring team points, scoring will be 9-7-6-5-4-3-2-1.
Because of the limited entries and the team-centric format, the meet has been compressed into an approximately five-hour time window. The men's weight throw is the first event at 11 a.m., with the long jump and pole vault starting at noon. Running events will begin at 1:15 p.m. and be concluded around 4:15 p.m.
The Utah State men finished third at the 2019 Mountain West Indoor Championships, while the USU women took sixth indoors. High jumper Audrey Garrett ranks 12th in the nation early this season with a mark of 5-09.25 (1.76m), and on the men's side, Josh Barclay is No. 21 nationally in the shot put.
South Dakota's women were the Summit League runner-up last season, and the Coyote men finished third at the Summit League Indoor Championships. USD features three-time NCAA champion Chris Nilsen and multiple-time All-American Helen Falda in the pole vault.
UNI placed second in the men's team race at the 2019 Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships, and the Panther women came in fourth. The Panther men have two athletes currently ranked in the NCAA top 25 in the shot put, with Darius King at No. 3 and Keegan Tritle at No. 24.
The four men's teams competing in the Bison Team Cup combine to have six athletes currently ranked in the NCAA's top 25 in the shot put.
NDSU swept the Bison Team Cup titles in the inaugural event last season, defeating UNI and Wyoming.
The meet coincides with an NDSU Track & Field alumni reunion that includes a tour of the Bison athletics facilities at 10:30 a.m. and a post-meet social at Sidestreet Grille & Pub.
