The North Dakota State University women's and men's track & field teams will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, to compete at the Drake Relays this Thursday through Saturday, April 22-24.
It will be a homecoming of sorts for the three Iowans on the NDSU roster – senior throwers Shelby Gunnells and Maddy Nilles, and second-year hurdler Trent Davis.
Gunnells (Solon HS) captured the Drake Relays high school shot put title in 2014 and 2015, taking the top spot among Iowa preps in all classes combined. Nilles (Dubuque Wahlert Catholic HS) won three straight Iowa Class 3A state championships in the discus from 2013-15, as well as taking Drake Relays runner-up honors in the discus as a senior in 2015. She won the collegiate hammer throw title at the 2018 Drake Relays.
Gunnells and Nilles are both in their sixth year with the Bison after using redshirt seasons and then opting to return in 2021 after the 2020 season was canceled. Nilles currently ranks fourth in the NCAA for the hammer throw, and Gunnells is seventh on the national performance list in the shot put.
Davis (Linn-Mar HS) won the Drake Relays 110m hurdles title and the 4A state championship as a high school senior in 2019. He currently ranks third in The Summit League this season for both the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles.
A portion of the Bison roster will also be competing at the Kip Janvrin Open hosted by Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, on Friday.
The Bison women were ranked 16th in the USTFCCCA national rankings last week before taking a week off from competition due to weather cancellations.
Both the Bison women and men were voted as the preseason favorites to win the Summit League outdoor team championships this season. NDSU has won 12 straight women's outdoor titles and 10 consecutive men's outdoor championships in The Summit League.
