EUGENE, Ore. – While
Riley Dolezal did not officially secure a spot at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Monday evening, the North Dakota State University alum kept the door open.
Â
Dolezal placed third in the javelin at the U.S. Olympic Trials, maintaining the possibility of representing Team USA at the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. He registered a throw of 252-10 (77.07m) on his final attempt, moving up from fifth place to third.
Â
Dolezal has not achieved the Olympic javelin qualifying standard of 85 meters, so his top-three U.S. finish does not automatically clinch an Olympic bid. The javelin field in Tokyo will consist of 32 men – 25 of which have already met the entry standards to claim spots.
Â
That leaves an expected seven bids left to be decided based on the World Athletics Rankings on July 1, which is when Dolezal will likely learn his Olympic fate.
Â
Dolezal, a native of Stanley, N.D, who competed for NDSU from 2005-09, has now finished in the top three of the javelin at the USATF Championships for eight consecutive years from 2013-21.
Â
Dolezal has competed for Team USA three times at the IAAF World Championships, but is in search of his first Olympic berth.
