OXBOW, N.D. – The North Dakota State men's golf team opened up the 2021-22 season on Tuesday with a victory over the University of North Dakota in a modified match play event at the Oxbow Country Club, as the Bison defeated UND 8.5-5.5.
 
Sophomores Nate Adams and Gavin Cronkhite were the big point scorers for the Bison, as both secured two points on the afternoon. Adams scored his first point by winning his original match with Zach Hinschberger 6 and 4. The Maple Grove, Minnesota native would go on to secure another point over the final four holes, winning 2 up.
 
Cronkhite would win his first point of the day by securing a 4 and 3 victory in the original match. After dropping the next two holes to Erik Stoxen to concede a point, Cronkhite would win the final hole 1 up for a second point for NDSU.
 
Freshman Josh Galvin would secure 1.5 points for the Bison in his first collegiate event. Like Adams, Galvin would also secure the original match point with a 6 and 4 victory. Over the final four holes, Galvin, who is also from Maple Grove, finished all square with Grayson Wetch, splitting the second point.
 
Freshman Ian Simonich also made his debut for the Bison on Tuesday and picked up a 1-0 victory over Brandon McGarry. The pairing played close over the entire round, with Simonich taking a late lead to win 1 up on the 18^th hole to claim the only point in the match.
 
Jack Johnson would secure a point, winning the original match against Seth Badolato 5 and 3. However, Johnson dropped the final three holes to concede two points.
 
Jed Baranczyk and Brock Winter each scored a half point. Baranczyk finished 18 holes all square with Alex Skarprud. After falling 4 and 3 to Lucas Feteri, Brock Winter earned half a point finishing the final three holes all square with Feteri.
 
In original matches, typical match play scoring, the Bison were dominant, wining 5.5-1.5. In secondary matches, North Dakota would outscore the Bison 4-3.
 
The two teams are set to meet again on Thursday in a stroke play event at the Fargo Country Club. First tee times are set for 11 a.m.
