CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – North Dakota State wrestling fell to the University of Virginia 31-6 Friday evening in the season opener held at the Virginia Aquatics & Fitness Center.
Aidan Brenot and No. 31 Max Petersen picked up the victories for NDSU. Brenot recorded an upset of No. 25 Hadyn Danals, winning 9-4, while Petersen topped Erik Roggie 6-3.
Brenot needed to battle from behind, as Danals secured a first period takedown for a 3-0 lead after one. Following a Danals escape to start the second, Brenot scored nine unanswered for the win. The redshirt freshman started with a takedown in the second and then added another takedown in the third after choosing a neutral start. Brenot secured a pair of stalling points and then added a riding time point at the end, as he picked up his first career ranked win.
Petersen also needed to make a comeback, as he gave up a first period takedown and trailed 3-1 after the first. The sophomore then rode out Roggie for the duration of the second period and earned an escape to start the third. Trailing by one, Petersen finished a takedown with 80 seconds to go and rode out the remainder of the period for a riding time point and a 6-3 win.
Virginia would open up a 9-0 lead after three decisions and then secured bonus point victories with a major decision at 157 pounds, tech fall at 174 pounds and a fall at 197 pounds.
NDSU will be back in action on Saturday, heading to Salem, Virginia to compete in the Southeast Open. Matches are set to begin at 8 a.m. CT. NDSU will also send wrestlers to the Jimmie Open in Jamestown, with that event starting at 9 a.m.
