SAN DIEGO, Calif. – North Dakota State men's golf is tied for the team lead, while golfer
Ian Simonich shares the individual lead, after day one of the UC San Diego Invitational held at Torrey Pines.
Simonich shot a -2 round of 70 to open up the three-day event and shares a three-way tie for first in the individual leaderboard. Simonich finished with five birdies in the round, along with 10 pars, as he shares the lead with Idaho's Matt McGann and Yale's Robert You.
Sitting one shot back by himself in fourth place is
Josh Galvin, who is playing as an individual in the event. Galvin matched Simonich with a team high five birdies in the first round, including three straight on holes 9, 10 and 11.
Jack Johnson also finds himself inside the top 10 as he sits in a tie for eighth in the 107-golfer field after opening up the event with a 73 to sit at +1. Johnson overcame three bogeys early, firing three birdies and just one bogey over the final 10 holes to move back up the leaderboard.

Nate Adams, who carded a 74 in the first of three rounds for the event. Adams had two birdies to shoot even on the front nine, but had a pair of bogeys and seven pars on the back nine to sit at +2.
Jake Skarperud wrapped the scoring rounds for the Bison with two birdies and a round of 76 to sit in a tie for 37
th.
Gavin Cronkhite had one birdie and shot a 77, sitting in a tie for 47
th to wrap the round for NDSU.
The Bison sit at +5 overall as a team, tied with Yale and Oklahoma Christian for the lead in the 17-team event. UC Santa Barbara and Idaho sit in a tie for fourth overall at +10.
The Bison will return to action on Monday with the second round. Tee times are set for 1 p.m. PT, 3 p.m. CT.
