SAN DIEGO, Calif. – North Dakota State men's golf remained at the top of the leaderboard after carding a tournament low 284 (-4) on Monday to hold a five shot lead heading into the final day of the UC San Diego Invitational at Torrey Pines. Bison
Jack Johnson also carded a 68 (-4) to move up to a tie for the top spot in the individual leaderboard.
Johnson led the way for the Bison on day two as he shot a field best round of 68 on Monday to move to -3 for the event, sharing a lead with Idaho's Johannes Hounsgaard. Johnson, who started the day in eighth, had two birdies on the front nine and then added two more birdies and an eagle on 17, while carding just two bogeys in the round.
Jake Skarperud also carded an under-par round for the Bison on day two, as he posted a 71 to move up to a tie for 20
th in the 107-golfer field. Skarperud started with a par, bogey, par over his first three holes, but then reeled off four consecutive birdies to move to -3. He would add two more birdies on his back nine, but had a +4 stretch over three holes to fall back over par for the tournament. He sits at +3 headed into the final day.
Gavin Cronkhite posted an even par round of 72 in the second round. Cronkhite climbed 15 spots on the day to a tie for 32
nd with four birdies and 11 pars in his round.
Nate Adams wrapped the scoring for the Bison in the second round, shooting a 73 (+1) on the day. Adams posted three birdies and 11 pars in his round and sits tied with Skarperud in a tie for 20
th at +3.
Ian Simonich posted a +3 round of 75 after his 70 on Sunday. Simonich had a birdie and 13 pars on the day and fell back to a tie for 7
th at +1.
Josh Galvin, playing as an individual, shot a 78 in the second round and enters the final day tied with Cronkhite at +5 in 32
nd.
All six Bison golfers sit in the top third of the field entering the final day, while the team (+1) holds a five-shot lead over Idaho (+6) headed into the final 18 holes. Yale (+7), Oklahoma Christian (+8) and UC Santa Barbara (+13 round out the top five in the 17-team field.
Tuesday's final round is slated of a 7 a.m. PT, 9 a.m. CT, shotgun start from Torrey Pines Golf Course.
