BROOKINGS, S.D. – North Dakota State wrestling's
Devin Wasley and
Ezekiel Witt led the Bison at the Daktronics Invitational, claiming individual titles at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.
Drew Blackburn-Forst also took the top spot in the heavyweight division.
Wasley claimed a win in his 197-pound round robin group with a pair of decision to advance to the first-place match. Wasley topped South Dakota State's Shane McConville 7-0 before defeating Minnesota's Silas Dailey 5-4 to win his group. Wasley then dominated in the final, defeating South Dakota State's Quin Morgan with a 16-1 tech fall.
Witt also picked up three wins at 125 pounds, topping everyone in his group, beginning with a 19-4 tech fall over Minnesota's Blake Beissel. Witt then secured a 5-1 win over South Dakota State's Logan Graf before securing a sweep of the group with an 8-2 win over Daniel Guanajuato of South Dakota State.
Drew Blackburn-Forst claimed the final title for NDSU, defeating fellow Bison
Shilo Jones in the heavyweight final in tiebreakers.
Andrew McMonagle picked up one of the biggest wins of the day for the Bison, claiming a tiebreaker victory over #27 Brock Fettig of South Dakota State. McMonagle also had another win but fell in his final match to take second overall at 184 pounds, one of four runner-up finishes for NDSU.
Max Magayna also reached the first-place match at 174 pounds, securing a 6-1 win over South Dakota State's Jacob Fistler before a 7-5 win over another Jackrabbit, Connor Gaynor. Magayna secured the first takedown in the final, but ultimately fell to #27 Moses Esponoza-Owens of SDSU.
Tristan Daugherty won two of his three matches on the day at 133 pounds to secure a runner-up finish in the round robin. Daugherty started with a 4-1 win in sudden victory over South Dakota State's Logan Swenson. After falling to SDSU's Cale Seaton, Daugherty secured another sudden victory win over Nebraska's Hayden Mills.
Michael Olson claimed the final runner-up spot, as he went 1-1 on the day in the 141-pound weight class. Olson fell in his opening match 5-1 to #12 Julian Tagg of South Dakota State, but Olson responded with a 2-1 win over SDSU's Tyson Peach to take second in the three-wrestler group.
The Bison will return to action in a week, as NDSU travels to Cedar Falls, Iowa to take on Northern Iowa in the first Big 12 dual of the season on Sunday, November 23. The dual is set to get underway at 1 p.m. at the McLeod Center.
