OMAHA, Neb. – The North Dakota State men's golf team opened up the Bluejay Invitational on Monday at Shadow Ridge Country Club, building a nine-stroke lead through the opening two rounds.
The Bison posted a -7 round over the first 18 holes on the day, sitting NDSU in a tie with St. Thomas atop the leaderboard. However, the Bison expanded the lead to nine, posting a -6 as a team to improve to -13 overall. St. Thomas sits in second at -4 and Drake rounds out the top three at even par headed into the final round Tuesday.
Rylin Petry and
Jake Skarperud led the way for the Bison in the opening round, as both golfers carded -3 rounds of 69. Petry had four birdies and Skarperud had seven.
Carter White was just behind with six birdies in the opening round, finishing at -2 with a 70.
Max Wilson shot a 73 over the opening 18 holes to give the Bison a -7 round of 281.
In the second round,
Carter White turned out the best round of his young career, as the freshman fired seven birdies on his way to a -5 round of 67 to improve to -7 for the tournament.
Gabe Benson, who shot a 76 in the opening round, answered back with three birdies and an eagle en route to a -2 round of 70 in the afternoon.
Skarperud continued an under-par day as he recorded three birdies in the second round as he shot a -1 round of 71 to move to -4 overall. Petry wrapped up the scoring for the Bison in the second round with a 74 to give the Bison a -6 at 282. Wilson shot a +3 round of 75 in the second round.
White leads the way for NDSU and sits in a tie for first at -7. He is joined by Creighton's Grant Feldman and Iowa's Jack McCarty at the top of the leaderboard. Skarperud sits three shots back in a tie for seventh overall at -4. Petry enters the final round in a tie for 15
th at -1, while Benson is in a tie for 24
th at +2. Wilson is tied for 33
rd at +4, putting all five Bison in the top half of the 71-golfer field.
The Bison wrap up the 54-hole tournament with the final round on Tuesday. The field is set to tee off a 9 a.m. from Shadow Ridge.
