Matt Johnson is in his fourth season as the head women’s golf coach at North Dakota State University. He was hired as the sixth coach in program history in June 2009.
A teaching professional from 1995 to 2012, he worked as the head golf pro and assistant pro at courses in Valley City, Fargo and Wahpeton, N.D., from 1995 to 1998.
Johnson began working at the Sports Bubble in Fargo as the general manager and teaching professional in 1999. He bought the facility and was the owner/operator and head teaching pro from 2004 to 2012 before selling it.
Johnson was NDSU's head men's golf coach for three seasons from 2001 to 2004. Under his direction, the Bison qualified for the NCAA tournament for the first time in 13 years in 2004.
His Bison men's team ranked as high as 23rd in the Golfstat collegiate rankings in 2003-04 and had two individual NCAA regional qualifiers in Jon Miller and Todd Taverna.
Johnson won the North Dakota College Athletic Conference individual championship in 1993 and was a three-time all-conference and all-district performer at Valley City State.
He attended NDSU for one year in 1990-91 before graduating from Valley City State in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He was an NAIA All-America Scholar Athlete.
Johnson is single and resides in West Fargo, N.D.
