Since arriving at NDSU in 2020, Vega has helped elevate the Bison sprints and hurdles program to new levels of success. His student-athletes have earned numerous conference championships and NCAA West Preliminary Round qualifications while setting school, conference, and facility records and producing dozens of top-10 performances in NDSU history.
Under Vega's guidance, NDSU student-athletes have earned some of the Summit League's highest individual honors. Anika Larson was named the 2026 Summit League Indoor Most Outstanding Performer of the Championships, while Paige Renschler earned the 2026 Summit League Outdoor Most Outstanding Performer of the Championships honor. Vega has also coached three Summit League Newcomers of the Year, highlighting his ability to develop incoming athletes into immediate conference-impact performers.
The 2025-26 season was among the most successful in program history for the Bison sprints and hurdles program. Vega's women's sprints and hurdles group played a pivotal role in leading NDSU to Summit League team championships. The group swept the top three positions in the 100-meter hurdles, finished first and second in both the 100 meters and 200 meters, and helped capture the conference title in the 4x100-meter relay. Paige Renscheler also established conference, facility, and school records in the women's 100 meters and 200 meters during the season.
Vega's athletes have consistently ranked among the nation's top event groups and have established school records in both the men's and women's sprint and hurdle events. He has coached Summit League champions in the sprints, hurdles, and relays while helping numerous athletes earn NCAA West Preliminary Round berths.
Prior to joining NDSU, Vega spent five seasons at the University of Mary, where he was named the 2019 and 2020 NSIC Indoor Assistant Coach of the Year and earned USTFCCCA Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year honors in 2018. During his tenure with the Marauders, he coached 21 NCAA Division II All-Americans and 14 NSIC conference champions while directing the sprints, hurdles, middle distance, and relay events.
Before UMary, Vega served as head track & field and cross country coach at the College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York, and as head coach at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa. During his time at Graceland, he coached 14 NAIA All-Americans and more than 40 national qualifiers.
A former Bison student-athlete, Vega was a three-time NCAA Division II All-American from 2002-07 and helped lead NDSU to a third-place team finish at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Championships. He was a member of NDSU's school-record indoor and outdoor 4x400-meter relay teams and remains among the top performers in program history in the 400 meters.
Vega graduated from NDSU with a degree in Business Administration in 2007 and earned a master's degree in Business Management from Minot State University in 2009. The St. Charles, Minnesota, native and his wife, Cassandra, are the proud parents of their daughter, Violet.
