Bret Maughan is in his 13th season as an assistant wrestling coach at North Dakota State. Maughan had head coaching stints at Bismarck (N.D.) State College from 1993-1995 and Moorhead (Minn.) High School from 1995-2000 before coming back to the Bison.
As a collegian, Maughan wrestled for NDSU from 1986-91. He was a three-year letterman and two-time Division II All-American, placing third in 1990 and second in 1991 at 118 pounds. He was also a two-time Division I national qualifier, competing at the University of Maryland in 1990 and the University of Iowa in 1991.
Maughan prepped for the Fargo North High School wrestling team where he was a six-year starter for the Spartans. After placing sixth at the state tournament as an eighth grader at 98 pounds, he never lost another match, winning 126 consecutive matches on his run of four straight state titles for North High. A first-team high school All-American, he was selected to wrestle in the Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic for Team USA.
Maughan is a distinguished member of the Fargo North Wrestling Hall of Fame, the Fargo North High School Hall of Fame and the North Dakota High School Wrestling Hall of Fame. He was most recently inducted into the Bison Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013 as a member of the 1988 national championship team.
Maughan earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education and coaching from North Dakota State in 1992, and his master’s degree in education in 2008. He has two sons, Lukas (16) and Yukon (12), and one daughter, Jaclyn (9).
