NDSU Looks for Strong Finish at NCAA Division II Championships May 27-29

The North Dakota State women's track & field team aims for a strong finish at the 2004 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 27-29 in Walnut, CA. The meet will be held in Hilmer Lodge Stadium on the campus of Mount San Antonio College and is hosted by Cal Poly Pomona. It will kickoff Thursday, at 8:30 am CDT, with the heptathlon.

Last season, NDSU placed third scoring 56 points, with Lincoln University taking the crown. Returning athletes competing this weekend who earned 2003 NCAA All-American honors include Kinsey Coles (Hillsboro, ND), who was the national champion in the 400-meter hurdles. Amanda Thieschafer (Melrose, MN) captured the title in the triple jump and placed eighth in the long jump. Jessica Roehrick (Bismarck, ND) and Kimberly Hilton (Huron, SD) placed fifth and eighth in the pole vault, respectively. Additionally, Shanda Larsen (Holdingfold, MN), Nicole Rieck (Huron, SD) and Coles also earned honors with a sixth place finish in the 4 x 400-meter relay.

Thieschafer; Coles Named NCC Track & Field Athletes of the Week
North Dakota State seniors Amanda Thieschafer and Kinsey Coles were both named the North Central Conference Outdoor Track & Field Women's Athlete of this season.
It was the seventh time in her career at NDSU that the Thieschafer, a senior from Melrose, MN, received this honor. She passed Mary Gill for the most in school history. She was selected the week of March 24. Coles was named April 20 and April 27, for the fourth and fifth times in her career.
The Coach
Ryun Godfrey is in his fifth season as the head North Dakota State University women's cross country and track & field coach. He is the seventh coach in the 36-year history of the program.
During the 2004 indoor season, Godfrey led the Bison women to a third-place finish at the NCAA Division II indoor meet and to a fifth consecutive North Central Conference Indoor crown. He was also named co-NCC Coach of the Year.
In 2003, he coached the Bison to third-place finishes at the NCAA Division II indoor and outdoor track & field championships. He also led North Dakota State to a pair of NCC titles during the indoor and outdoor seasons. He was named the USTCA (United States Track Coaches Association) North Central Region Indoor Coach of the Year, and the North Central Conference Indoor and Outdoor Coach of the Year.
Godfrey directed NDSU to the 2002 NCAA Division II indoor track & field national title and a runner-up finish at the 2002 outdoor track & field nationals. The 31-year-old swept up six coaching awards for his efforts, being named the USTCA Division II and North Central Region Indoor and Outdoor Coach of the Year, and the NCC Indoor and Outdoor Coach of the Year.
Godfrey was also the 2001 USTCA North Central Region Women's Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year, 2000 and 2001 NCC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year, and 1999 NCC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year.
Godfrey was a graduate assistant in the program during the 1998-99 school year. He was an All-NCC performer while running for the Bison from 1992-1996. He is a 1996 graduate of NDSU with a bachelor's degree in physical education and is finishing work towards a master's degree in athletic administration.
The coaching staff includes assistants Desire'e Larson, Stevie Keller, Brent Parmer, Tim Byers and graduate assistant Eric Butery.
