FARGO, N.D.--Switch-hitting shortstop Patrick Gaylord of Wharton County Junior College in Wharton, Texas, has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his education and play baseball at North Dakota State University. That announcement was made today by NDSU head coach Mitch McLeod.
Gaylord, who has two years of eligibility remaining, is the first player to sign with North Dakota State during the early signing period, which runs through Wednesday, Nov. 16.
Recruited by Texas and Baylor out of high school, Gaylord went to the University of Houston and started 24 of 29 games played in his freshman year. He hit .263 with 13 runs scored and 10 RBIs before sitting out the 2005 season and transferring to Wharton County. He participated in the Texas/New Mexico junior college all-star game this fall.
Gaylord was a three-year starter at James E. Taylor High School in Katy, Texas, for coach Melvin Cerny. He hit .354 with a .481 on-base percentage his senior year as Taylor High went 22-9 and advanced to the Texas regional quarterfinals.
Gaylord intends to major in exercise science at North Dakota State. He is the son of Michael and Jackie Gaylord of Houston, Texas.
North Dakota State finished the 2005 season with a 10-43-1 record. The 2006 season will be North Dakota State's third year in a five-year NCAA reclassification from Division II to Division I.
