CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- Amber Garrett allowed no runs over 13.1 innings on the mound as North Dakota State University defeated Saint Louis University 6-2 and host Charlotte 3-0 on Friday, March 11, during the opening day of the Holiday Inn 49er Softball Classic at the Phillips Complex.
North Dakota State (8-6) is scheduled to play Liberty University at 12 noon and Lafayette College at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 12, as tournament play continues.
Garrett, a junior right-hander from Pueblo, Colo., threw 6.1 scoreless innings in relief of freshman Bekki Rasmussen in the first game against Saint Louis (4-8), then threw a three-hit shutout past the host 49ers in a seven-inning start in the second.
"Amber (Garrett) had a great day. She just came out and hit her spots. Her ball was really moving. Amber was in control out there on the mound the entire day. There were a lot of pop-ups today," said North Dakota State head coach Darren Mueller about the pitching performance from the transfer from Otero (Colo.) Junior College.
Garrett, who improved to 3-0 this season, stayed ahead and out of trouble in the two games. She scattered six hits, issued one walk and struck out seven in 13.1 innings.
North Dakota State trailed 2-0 early but tied the game in the second inning on Jen Shollenberger's RBI single to center. The Bison exploded for five of their 11 hits and four runs in the sixth inning as Heather Hyatt, Grete Peterson, Lynnae Foshag and Aimee Enzler all stroked RBI singles.
Foshag led NDSU against the Billikens with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate including two RBI and a double, while Erin Troup added a double and single. The Bison recorded five stolen bases in the first game.
Visiting North Dakota State jumped on top early against Charlotte (8-13-1). Hyatt led off the game with a walk, stole second and scored on Peterson's RBI-single to center. The Bison took advantage of a Jennifer Morse walk, Hyatt's sacrifice bunt and a 49ers' error to increase the lead to 2-0 in the fifth. NDSU tacked on an insurance run in the seventh when Morse crossed the plate on a Foshag run-scoring base hit.
Offensively, Garrett had a double and single in the second game, while Peterson also had two hits for North Dakota State. The Bison did outhit the 49ers 6-3, but had to work around the 11 strikeouts recorded by Charlotte pitcher Christy Murray.
