CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- Allison Bakke struck out a career-high 14 batters in the first game as North Dakota State defeated Liberty University 3-1 and the Bison exploded for 11 runs in the fourth to beat Lafayette College 13-2 on Saturday, March 12, during the second day of the Holiday Inn 49er Classic at the Phillips Complex.
North Dakota State (10-6) improved to 4-0 at the Holiday Inn 49er Classic and is scheduled to play an opponent to be determined on Sunday, March 13, in the championship round of the tournament.
Bakke, a freshman righty from Anoka, Minn., scattered five hits in the opener and issued no walks to even her record at 4-4 this season. She reached double-figure strikeouts for the fourth time this season. NDSU outhit Liberty 9-5 led by Erin Troup's double and single, and the two singles from Grete Peterson.
North Dakota State also stole five bases and took advantage of four Liberty University miscues during the contest. The Bison broke out to a 2-0 lead in the third combining three errors and three hits including Amy Hemingson's RBI single. NDSU added a single run in the fourth when a passed ball chased home pinch-runner Ashley Leier, who stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball to move into scoring position.
Liberty (7-7) cut the deficit to 3-1 in the sixth when Jessica Moore doubled, advanced to third on Beth Hensley's single and scored on Ashley Williams' sacrifice fly. Moore led the Flames with a pair of hits. Sarah Swor (3-5) worked the first 4.1 innings to pick up the loss. She allowed seven hits, struck out seven and walked four.
