CHARLOTTE, N.C.--Allison Bakke drove in the winning run in the top of the seventh as North Dakota State University defeated host Charlotte 2-1 on Sunday, March 13, in the Holiday Inn 49er Classic championship game at the Phillips Complex.
North Dakota State (11-6) won its second of three tournaments played this spring by posting a 5-0 record over the three-day event. The Bison are scheduled to play the Phoenix of Elon University (10-11) at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, in Elon, N.C.
"It's a great start for our spring break. We accomplished one of our goals by winning this tournament," said NDSU head coach Darren Mueller. The Bison opened the season by coming back to claim the UCF tournament title.
"Our pitching came on and we started to hit better with runners on base. We're showing improvement each weekend and that's one of the goals of our team this season."
NDSU senior second baseman Heather Hyatt started things off with a single to left in bottom of the seventh, advanced to second on Grete Peterson's bunt single and scored on Bakke's run-scoring shot to center field. Peterson, a sophomore center fielder from Granite Falls, Minn., was named the Classic's MVP after hitting .389 with five runs scored, a pair of RBI and several impressive defensive plays in the outfield.
Bakke, a freshman righthander from Anoka, Minn., shut the door on the host 49ers (10-15-1) in the bottom of the seventh to record the win. She struck out five, scattered five hits and issued no walks to improve to 5-4. Bakke was named the tournament's Most Valuable Pitcher after going 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA, 19 strikeouts and no walks over 14 innings pitched.
Charlotte jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the fourth inning as Kristi Killough's sacrifice fly chased home Lauren Schmitz, who doubled to lead off the frame. Killough went 2-for-2 to pace the 49ers. Kristen Bowen (7-7) went the distance on the mound for Charlotte, striking out four and walking one.
North Dakota State tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth. Pinch-runner Megan Slater entered for Erin Troup, who singled to lead off the inning. Slater stole second and scored on Bakke's two-out single to center.
The Bison finished with 11 hits led by Bakke, who went 3-for-4. Amber Garrett and Hyatt each had a pair of singles. NDSU finished hitting .345 at the Classic, outscored the opposition 27-6 and also recorded 18 stolen bases in 20 attempts.
