FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State softball scored 13 runs in the first inning to blow bast South Dakota State 15-2 on Saturday, completing a Summit League series sweep over the Jackrabbits on senior day at Tharaldson Park.
NDSU took control of the game in the first inning, setting a new program record with 13 runs, surpassing the previous record of 12 in the third inning of an 18-4 win over Nicholls State on February 22, 2014.
Mya Boos also set a NDSU record on Saturday, becoming the first Bison to hit two home runs in a single inning. Boos hit a two-run home run to make it 4-0 early in the first, recording her third home run in three games. Later in the first inning, she added her second grand slam of the weekend, capping the 13-run inning.
Senior Bella Dean started the scoring with an RBI single in the first, and Jessica Delatorre followed it up two batters later with a sacrifice fly, before Boos hit her first home run. Senior Ella Claus and Amai Hanta then added back-to-back RBI singles to extend the lead to 6-0.
After Star Cortez hit a single to load the bases, the Bison recorded three-consecutive walks to extend the lead to 9-0 and bring up Boos with the bases loaded, setting up the grand slam.
NDSU would add two more runs in the second, as Savannah Henzler recorded a pinch-hit RBI single to score senior Zoe King. Henzler then scored two batters later on the third RBI of the day from Dean on her second hit of the day.
Senior Piper Reed was dominant in the circle early, holding SDSU to one hit through four innings. She finished with two strikeouts and just one walk in 4.2 innings of work.
Cortez led the Bison with three hits in the game and also scored two runs. Hanta was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Dean went 2-for-2 with a walk and three RBIs in her final game at Tharaldson Park. Claus joined Dean with two hits, an RBI and a run in her final game. Fellow senior Zoe King also had a hit and two runs scored on the afternoon.
Saturday's win capped the third Summit League series sweep for the Bison this season. It is the most three-game sweeps for NDSU in Summit League play since the 2019 season. NDSU also matched a program record with 41 runs in a Summit League series, tying the 2015 Bison who scored 41 against Fort Wayne.
North Dakota State will now turn to the Summit League Tournament being held in Minneapolis next week. NDSU will be the No. 3 seed and take on No. 6 seed South Dakota State on Wednesday in the opening round. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. from Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.
