
Erickson's Hitting Streak Ends at 12 as Valparaiso Completes Doubleheader Sweep

VALPARAISO, Ind.--North Dakota State outfielder Tim Erickson had a 12-game hitting streak snapped in the second game as Valparaiso completed a doubleheader sweep of the Bison in college baseball Friday, May 13. The Crusaders won 11-7 in the opener and 6-1 in the nightcap.
Erickson was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored in the first game to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. His hitless game in the nightcap was his first since the South Dakota State doubleheader on April 17. He has hit safely in 19 of NDSU's last 22 games.
The Bison (6-38-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first game before Valparaiso tied it with a four-run second inning capped by Brian Rzepka's two-run homer.
Valparaiso (19-26) tacked on three runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth en route to the 11-7 victory.
NDSU reliever Shane Bushland took the loss and dropped to 1-5 on the year. He allowed four runs on five hits and struck out three.
Bison starter Jake Laber lasted only an inning and two-thirds. He allowed four runs on three hits, walked two and struck out two.
Valpo's Harvey Yergin went six innings for the win. Yergin scattered eight hits and allowed only four earned runs while walking three and striking out three.
The Crusaders used a four-run first inning to jump ahead for good in the nightcap. Two runs scored on wild pitches, another came in on an RBI double by Matthew Augustine, and the fourth scored on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.
Bison starter Jay Mitchell threw only two-thirds of an inning before leaving. He dropped to 0-6 on the year.
NDSU scored its only run in the fourth inning when Ryan Langlais hit a one-out triple and later scored on a two-out infield single by Gavin Hofer.
Nick Mazzone pitched six innings for Valpo and evened his record at 2-2. Adam Knobel struck out the side in the seventh to end the game.
North Dakota State and Valparaiso are scheduled to wrap up their four-game series with a doubleheader Saturday, May 14, beginning at noon.
