FARGO, N.D.--The Creighton Bluejays completed a three-game series sweep of North Dakota State in college baseball Thursday, May 19, with a 16-1 victory at Newman Outdoor Field.
Creighton, ranked 30th in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll, took a 6-1 lead in the sixth inning with a solo home run by catcher Tony Daniel and a two-run single by designated hitter Zach Daeges.
The Bluejays sent 14 men to bat in an eight-run seventh inning that blew the game open. Ten of the first 12 batters all reached safely, interrupted only by sacrifice flies by Brad Dutton and Chris Gradoville.
Meanwhile, the Creighton pitching staff set down 16 straight Bison hitters from the third inning until one out in the eighth when Jacorian Goldmann reached on an infield error and Nathan Thomas singled to right field.
North Dakota State mustered only four hits in the game. Thomas finished 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the third, Ryan Langlais was 1-for-2 with a triple, and Matt Mossey was 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to nine games.
Starting pitcher Terry Tchida took the loss for the Bison. Tchida worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits, walking two and striking out three.
Creighton starter Eric Wordekemper earned the win with four innings of work. He allowed one run on three hits and fanned two.
Matt Bowers and Trevor Benson each threw two innings of scoreless relief and Pat Venditte, a switch-pitcher who threw right-handed in this appearance, retired the side in the ninth to finish the game.
Creighton finished the regular season 42-13 overall with at least a share of the Missouri Valley Conference title.
North Dakota State dropped to 8-41-1 heading into a four-game series at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich., this weekend. The Bison and Golden Grizzlies will play doubleheaders at noon ET on Saturday, May 21, and Sunday, May 22.
