MINNEAPOLIS--North Dakota State's pitching staff walked nine batters and four of them resulted in runs as the Minnesota Gophers took a 5-1 college baseball win at Siebert Field on Tuesday, May 3.

North Dakota State (5-35-1) fell behind in the first inning when Bison starter Brandon Goltz issued two-out walks to Mike Mee and Jake Elder. Both Gopher runners came around to score on Andy Hunter's double to left-center field.

North Dakota State trimmed the score to 2-1 with three singles in the fifth inning.

Charles Magedanz led off with a hit, Ryan Langlais reached one batter later, and Tim Erickson's two-out single through the right side scored Magedanz. It extended Erickson's hitting streak to nine games.

Meanwhile, the Gophers (23-20) went scoreless until the seventh.

Matt Fornasiere hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on David Hrncirik's single up the middle.

Minnesota had two runners in scoring position with one out before NDSU closer Neil Wagner came on to get a fly ball and an infield pop-up to end the inning.

Fornasiere and the Gophers would get to Wagner in the eighth, however.

Walks to Tony Leseman and pinch hitter Luke MacLean set the table for Fornasiere, who hit his second double of the game to score both runners and bump Minnesota's lead to 5-1.

Goltz worked five innings in the loss, allowing two runs on four hits, walking six and striking out one. He dropped to 0-5 on the year.

NDSU's Kole Zimmerman and Matt Freudenthal each had two hits.

Minnesota starter Tim Theis held the Bison scoreless on one hit in a predetermined three innings of work to improve to 1-0 on the year.

The Gophers' Jon Mueller picked up the save with 2 1/3 innings of work. Mueller allowed two hits and three walks and struck out two.

North Dakota State is scheduled to host Minnesota-Duluth on Thursday, May 5, at Newman Outdoor Field. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
