NDSU Soccer Set to Host Mary and Northern Iowa; Bison to Play First Regular-Season Home Match Since 2003

THE GAMES:
The North Dakota State women's soccer team will play its first regular season home match in almost two years when they host the University of Mary on Sept. 1 at 4 p.m. at the Ellig Sports Complex.The last home match the Bison played was a 2-0 win against St. Cloud State on October 19, 2003.
NDSU stays in town over the weekend with a Sept. 4 clash with the University of Northern Iowa.
SCOUTING MARY:
This will be the fifth meeting between NDSU and Mary. The Bison hold a perfect 4-0 record against the Marauders. The most recent meeting between the two in-state schools ended with a 1-0 Bison win in 2001. NDSU has outscored Mary 10-1 in the four meetings.The Marauders are coming off of a 15-7-1 record in head coach Levi Evan's first year. They return six starters from the 2004 squad.
SCOUTING NORTHERN IOWA: Northern Iowa and NDSU met for the first time on Sept. 12, 2004, with the Bison pulling out a 2-1 win in Cedar Falls.
Jessica Rodgers scored both goals for NDSU in that game, the second coming in the 59th minute to break the 1-1 tie.
Northern Iowa finished 2004 with a 2-14-2 overall record and a 2-6 record in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Panthers are led by interim head coach Kathy Kakoyianni-Bering. They return 11 starters from the 2004 team.
UNI is 1-1 on the young season after an opening 4-0 loss against Furman and a 5-2 win against Division II Minnesota State, Mankato.
The Panthers are set to play South Dakota State on Friday, Sept. 4.
BODY WORK:
Sophomore defender Chelsea Body will miss the entire 2005 season with an ACL injury sustained during practice last week. After starting eight games as a freshman in 2004, Body will sit out with a medical hardship redshirt this season.LAST WEEK:
The Bison posted a 2-0 shutout to open the regular season against Troy University at the Tulane Tournament in New Orleans.Senior Jessica Rodgers scored both goals for the Bison. Freshman Jestina Orlando provided the assist on the first goal.
The Bison defense controlled the ball effectively and only allowed the Trojans two shots the entire game. Neither shot was on goal. After entering the game scoreless at the end of the first period, NDSU proved proficient in the second half by scoring on both shot attempts.
HURRICANE FORCES CANCELLATION:
Last Sunday's game against the University of Alabama at the Tulane Tournament was cancelled due to the evacuation of New Orleans for Hurricane Katrina.BISON AMONGST INDEPENDENTS
: North Dakota State is one of nine schools competing as independents in Division I soccer. In 2004, NDSU's five wins placed them in a tie for fourth place for number of victories behind Kennesaw State (12), Colorado College (8) and IPFW (6).INDEPENDENT WEEKLY AWARDS
: Nine NCAA Division I independent soccer teams have joined forces to select three weekly award winners. Sports information directors from each school will choose a Player of the Week, Defensive Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week. The first set of awards will be announced Wednesday, Sept. 7.NEW FACES, NEW PLACES
: North Dakota State welcomes six freshmen and one transfer to this year's team. Nicole Rand, Becky Iwanicki and Holly Ramaeker will compete for playing time as midfielders. At the forward position, Jestina Orlando and Stacey Howell will bring immediate depth to the team. Karli Kopietz joins the Bison in goal via the University of Minnesota. Another new goalie, Megan Carrica, joins the team but will sit out the year with a medical hardship after an injury during the summer.In addition, eight Bison made position changes in the offseason.

ASSISTANT COACHES: Assisting NDSU head coach Pete Cuadrado are John Ross and Matt Howe. Ross is in his third year with the Bison program while Howe enters his fourth season.
