NDSU Looks to Extend Home Winning Streak to Ten on Sunday

THIS WEEK:
The Bison host Minnesota State, Mankato (0-2-0) at the Ellig Sports Complex on Sunday, Sept. 3. Kickoff is set for noon. The Bison enter the contest with a 1-1-0 record after defeating Mary 5-1 and falling to Minnesota 2-0.ABOUT MSU:
The Mavericks return eight starters from the 2005 squad which finished the season 11-9-1 and recorded a 9-2-1 (2nd) mark in North Central Conference play. MSU advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II Central Regional where they were defeated by Nebraska-Omaha 4-0. Chris Miskee is in his 11th season with the Mavericks and sports a 116-70-7 record after opening the season with losses to Truman State (2-1) and Central Missouri State (3-1). MSU will host Winona State on Friday before making the trip to Fargo.THE SERIES:
The Bison have a 1-7-2 record versus their former NCC foe. Minnesota State won the last meeting 2-0 on Oct. 17, 2003 in Mankato. It was NDSU head coach Pete Cuadrado's first season as a Bison and the school's last as a member of Division II. The Mavericks have won four straight in the series and have gone undefeated in seven straight with a tie coming in 1999. The lone Bison win came in 1996, when NDSU prevailed 3-1 in Fargo.AT THE ELLIG:
The Bison have won nine straight home contests with the last loss coming against Nebraska-Omaha on Oct. 5, 2003. In 2005, the team finished the season with a perfect home ledger, going 7-0 and outscoring its opponents 21-2. Six of those contests were shutouts with Northern Colorado scoring the only two goals against the Bison in Fargo. Since moving to the Ellig Sports Complex, NDSU has compiled a 44-15-3 record. Cuadrado is 12-1-1 all time at home.USC STATS:
Through the first week of the season, NDSU's Michelle Martinez leads the United Soccer Conference in shots (9), points (6) and goals (3). With a goal and an assist, Jestina Orlando is tied for seventh in points with three. Freshman Monica Morgan is tied for third in goals against average (1.33) and tied for second in save percentage (.778).SEASON OPENER:
NDSU improved to 8-4 all-time in season openers and 3-1 under Cuadrado after a 5-1 win versus Mary on August 25. Michelle Martinez added three goals after scoring strikes from Jestina Orlando and Sarah Panzer gave the Bison a 5-1 win.GOPHER HOLE:
The Bison lost 2-0 at the University of Minnesota on Sunday, Aug. 27. Elena Fruci scored both goals including a successful strike moments before halftime. The Bison outshot Minnesota five to four in the second half but could not put the ball past the Gopher defense.HATS OFF:
With three goals against the University of Mary, Michelle Martinez moved into a tie for eighth all time in goals at NDSU. Martinez, who recorded a hat trick last season as well, now has 17 goals in her career. Up next on the list is Carrie Fontana (1997-2000) with 21. Nicole Vanden Bos (1996, 1998-2000) holds the school record with 50.CUADRADO MOVES INTO NO. 2 SPOT:
With the win in the season opener, NDSU head coach Pete Cuadrado moved into second on the school's all-time win list. Cuadrado, in his fourth year at the helm, holds a 28-20-4 record. Matt Townsend (1998-2002) holds the school mark with 55 wins.FRESHMEN STARTERS:
Through two matches, two NDSU freshmen have received starting nods. Lorraine Thompson has opened play in both matches while Monica Morgan started in front of the net against Minnesota.EXHIBITION RECAP:
After a 1-0 victory at Creighton, the Herd got the offense going against Bemidji State with an 11-0 win to close out preseason play. Michelle Martinez landed four goals and Ashley Dement added three to lead the scoring attack. Jessica Nei played every minute in goal for a pair of shutouts.ARCHIVED VIDEO:

Posting a school-record tying 10 shutouts, NDSU finished the season at 11-5-1, a year after a 5-11-1 mark without the benefit of a home match.RETURNERS:
The Bison return two of its top scorers in Michelle Martinez and Jestina Orlando. Martinez led the team in goals for the second straight season (8) and Orlando gathered a team high in assists as a freshman with four. Defender Sarah Panzer returns for her senior season after starting 50 of 50 matches during her career. Midfielders Patty Romeo and Kelsey Hohol started all 17 matches last season as sophomores.ROOKIES RANKED:
Soccer Buzz Magazine ranked North Dakota State's 2006 recruiting class second among United Soccer Conference affiliates on May 26. Utah Valley State earned the top marks in the conference while South Dakota State was positioned third.According to SoccerBuzz.com, "In their short time in Division I, NDSU and SDSU are both recruiting nicely and will move quickly to the top of this league before their schools find permanent conference affiliation."
Ashley Dement (Harrisburg, S.D.), Alison Feders (Woodbury, Minn.), Laura Murphy (East Bethel, Minn.) and Lorraine Thompson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) committed to NDSU in early February. Ali Ramaeker (Menomonie, Wis.) and Monica Morgan (Duncan, British Columbia, Canada) rounded out the class later in the month.
THE UNITED SOCCER CONFERENCE:
The Bison will begin play in the United Soccer Conference in 2006 as a member of the league's West Division, which includes South Dakota State, Utah Valley State and IPFW. The USC East Division will see Delaware State shift from the west to join Howard University, Longwood University and South Carolina State. IPFW won the inaugural conference championship last season with a 2-1 win over Utah Valley State.
