FARGO, N.D. - Freshman Quin Ryan recorded the first hat trick of her North Dakota State career in leading the Bison to a 3-1 victory over New Jersey Tech at the Ellig Sports Complex. It is the fifth straight victory for NDSU as the Bison improve to 10-4-0 on the season.
The Highlanders (0-12-0) would strike first as Kori Washington was able to get control of the ball in traffic and put a quick shot past goalkeeper Monica Morgan in the fourth minute to give NJIT the early lead.
Ryan stole the show after that, scoring the equalizer in the 13th minute. She took a pass from sophomore Lorraine Thompson, made some nice moves around the Highlander defense, and fired a shot to the right side of goalkeeper Sadie Mele. Ryan would strike again with the eventual game-winner in the 25th minute as she took a loose ball off a corner kick and put it through traffic into the net to give the Bison a 2-1 lead.
The freshman then added an insurance goal in the 33rd minute, taking a pass from senior Patty Romeo and getting another quick shot past Mele to give NDSU the 3-1 lead. It was all the Bison would need, as Ryan becomes the 15th player in NDSU history to record a hat trick and the first since teammates Michelle Martinez and Thompson both did it against Howard last season. Ryan is now tied for the team lead in goals with five and is second on the team in points with 11.
"We knew that Quin had it in her, and it would just take the right situation for it to happen," said head coach Pete Cuadrado. "It's just one of those things where everything was on for her today."
It marks the eighth time in the past 10 years that NDSU has won at least 10 games in a season, and the victory improves North Dakota State's record at the Ellig Sports Complex to 8-1-0 this season and 19-2-1 since the beginning of the 2005 season. The win also was the 50th of Cuadrado's career on the Bison sideline, as he now has an overall record of 50-30-5.
"This is a team effort, and the credit needs to go to John (Ross), Randy (Jewett), and the girls out on that field," said Cuadrado. "We're all in this together."
North Dakota State closes out the 2007 campaign with five straight Summit League contests, beginning Thursday when the Bison travel south to take on rival South Dakota State at 7 p.m. NDSU returns home for the final time on Saturday, Oct. 20, when it hosts Western Illinois, who currently sits atop the league standings with 12 points. Kickoff against the Westerwinds is set for 1 p.m.
