
North Dakota State Defeats New Jersey Institute of Technology, 80-57

NEWARK, N.J.--Sophomore guard Ben Woodside scored a game-high 22 points to lead North Dakota State to an 80-57 win over New Jersey Institute of Technology in Division I independent men's basketball Saturday.
Woodside was one of four starters to reach double-figure scoring for the Bison, who shot 57 percent (30-53) from the field and upped their record to 15-7.
Mike Nelson, also a sophomore guard, finished with 18 points, followed by senior forward Andre Smith (17 points) and sophomore forward Brett Winkelman (15).
Nelson, who shot 7-for-9 from the field, including 3-for-4 on 3-pointers, also led the floor with eight rebounds and six assists with just one turnover in 33 minutes.
NJIT (4-19) got 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds from freshman center Dan Stonkus, and freshman guard Mike Manning came off the bench for 13 points.
The Highlanders were dealt a severe early blow when senior guard Clayton Barker, NJIT's leading scorer, sustained a knee injury less than three minutes into the contest and did not return. Barker was coming off a season-high 27 points in Thursday's win over South Dakota State.
North Dakota State, which led by as many as eight points in the first half, held a 35-28 halftime advantage, paced by Woodside's 13 points.
The Bison heated up in the second half, shooting 16-for-24 from the field and 11-for-14 at the foul line.
On defense, the Bison held NJIT to just three points in the opening 6:42 of the second half and North Dakota State took a 49-31 lead on Woodside's traditional three-point play with 13:49 left.
NDSU went ahead by as many as 23 points, also the final margin, with two Woodside free throws at the 3:35 mark of the second half.
North Dakota State is scheduled to conclude its five-game road stretch next week with games at Utah Valley State on Thursday, Feb. 15, and at Texas-Pan American on Saturday, Feb. 17.
