Four-Run Sixth Vaults Northern Iowa to Sweep of North Dakota State

WATERLOO, Iowa--Northern Iowa scored four runs in the sixth inning to go ahead for good in an 8-5 win over North Dakota State in college baseball Sunday afternoon at Riverfront Stadium.
The victory completed a three-game sweep by Northern Iowa (17-19). The Bison dropped to 7-22 overall.
North Dakota State started the scoring in the first inning when Greg Plecki hit a solo home run. It was his third round-tripper of the year. UNI's Dane Embury answered with a solo shot in the second to tie the game.
The Panthers went ahead with two runs in the third inning when Erskine, Minn., native Eric Hoffmann drew a two-out walk and Brandon Douglas homered to give UNI a 3-1 lead.
The Bison went ahead 4-3 in the fifth. Billy Gazich singled and later scored on an outfield throwing error, Plecki scored Matt Watson with an RBI groundout, and Matt Mossey singled and scored on a passed ball.
Northern Iowa's first five batters reached safely in the four-run sixth, which was capped by a two-run single by Hoffmann.
Deric Manrique homered for UNI in the eighth before Kenny Beese's ninth-inning single drove in Gavin Hofer for the final margin.
Manrique and Hoffmann both hit 3-for-4 for Northern Iowa. Kole Zimmerman was 2-for-4 for the Bison.
Mossey (1-3) was the losing pitcher for NDSU. He allowed seven runs on 11 hits, walked one and struck out three in six innings.
North Dakota State continues its five-game road trip with games at Nebraska on Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon at Haymarket Park in Lincoln.
