OREM, Utah--Infielder Ryan Langlais was 2-for-4 with two runs scored as North Dakota State lost 5-3 to New York Tech on the second day of the Division I independent baseball tournament Thursday, May 24.
Langlais upped his team-high batting average to .324 as the Bison (14-31) slipped to 0-2 in tournament play. NDSU will face Chicago State (4-51) on Friday, May 25.
North Dakota State started the scoring in the second inning when Langlais drew a leadoff walk and scored on left fielder Kole Zimmerman's 10th double of the season to make it 1-0.
New York Tech third baseman Denten Neill hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to put NYIT ahead 2-1.
The Bears led the rest of the way behind the pitching of Joe Esposito, who worked 8 2/3 innings and improved to 7-5 on the year. Esposito allowed three runs on nine hits, walked five and struck out six.
NYIT reliever Mike Roth faced two batters in the ninth and left the bases loaded for his fourth save of the season.
North Dakota State starter Jeff Hille (2-8) was tagged with the loss. Hille allowed three runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out five.
Zimmerman and second baseman Matt Watson each had two hits for NDSU.
Neill added a double to finish 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored for NYIT, and teammates Kraig Binick, Brian Smith and Julian Richards each had a pair of hits.
In other action Thursday, Northern Colorado had eight extra-base hits including four homers in a 17-3 pounding of Chicago State, and South Dakota State drew 17 walks and hit five round-trippers in a 20-2 rout of Chicago State.
Tournament host Utah Valley State plays New Jersey Tech in the night game.
