OREM, Utah--North Dakota State infielder Ryan Langlais hit for the cycle and drove in four runs to lead the Bison to a 9-6 victory over New Jersey Tech at the Division I independent baseball tournament Saturday, May 26.
Langlais, a junior from Apple Valley, Minn., hit a two-out double in the first, a two-out RBI single in the third, a two-run triple in the fifth, and a leadoff homer in NDSU's five-run eighth inning.
Not only did Langlais achieve a rare baseball feat, he had two timely hits at pivotal points of the game. His two-run triple came with the Bison leading 2-1 in the fifth, and his solo homer tied the game at 5 after NJIT had scored four unanswered runs for the lead.
Langlais is a contender for tournament MVP honors after hitting .722 (13-for-18) in four tournament games with seven extra-base hits and no errors in 17 defensive chances. He hit four home runs to up his season total to 10, and he jumped his season batting average 48 points to a final .355.
North Dakota State had only three other hits in Saturday's victory. Center fielder Greg Plecki hit a two-run single in the eighth inning, first baseman Sebastian Miles singled and scored in the eighth, and right fielder Luke Otto had an RBI single and scored a run in the eighth.
Bison starter Seth Foley allowed two runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts in six innings, but Foley did not factor in the decision. Reliever Matt Mossey (3-3) got the win despite allowing three runs on five hits in two innings of work.
Left fielder Derrick McCain and designated hitter Kwesi Mitchell each had two hits for New Jersey Tech (15-28).
North Dakota State (16-31) finished the tournament with a 2-2 record and is in fourth place behind South Dakota State, New York Tech and Utah Valley State with two games remaining.
New York Tech plays Northern Colorado in Saturday's second game, and tournament host Utah Valley State plays Chicago State in the final contest.
Saturday was the final game for NDSU head coach Mitch McLeod, who announced his resignation last Tuesday, May 22. McLeod had a 347-322-4 record in 15 seasons and is the winningest baseball coach in North Dakota State history.
