Woodside's Record 60 Points Not Enough; Bison Fall to SFA in Three Overtimes

DES MOINES, Iowa--Walt Harris hit a running five-foot jumper with 4.4 seconds left in the third overtime to give Stephen F. Austin a 112-111 victory over North Dakota State in the first game of the Drake Hy-Vee Classic men's basketball tournament Friday, Dec. 12.
North Dakota State's final chance with 0.3 seconds left was a catch-and-shoot lob pass to forward Brett Winkelman, whose shot from 12 feet rimmed off at the buzzer.
Bison guard Ben Woodside set Knapp Center, NDSU and Summit League records with 60 points, 30 free throws made, and 35 free-throw attempts. His 30 free throws tied the NCAA single-game record set by LSU's Pete Maravich in December 1969 against Oregon State.
It was the highest point total in the NCAA this year, passing Davidson star Stephen Curry's 44 twice against North Carolina State and Oklahoma. Woodside also had eight rebounds and eight assists.
"I really wanted our team to win," Woodside said. "I was fighting as hard as I could and trying to get to the free-throw line and have the clock stop so we could score points."
Woodside scored 49 of his 60 points in the final 8:51 of the second half and three overtimes to help NDSU overcome a 63-44 deficit which was SFA's biggest lead of the night.
"Woodside's performance was absolutely phenomenal," said NDSU head coach Saul Phillips. "He really played well and he played hard. We certainly saw something special tonight."
Stephen F. Austin led 20-2 eight minutes into the game after North Dakota State missed nine of its first 10 shots, but the Bison responded with a 15-3 run over the next six minutes with a spark from center Lucas Moormann, who scored NDSU's first six points of the game.
North Dakota State (4-3) was within four points twice late in the first half before Eric Bell banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give SFA a 35-28 lead at intermission.
The Lumberjacks (5-2) had four players score in double figures led by guard Eddie Williams (25), forward Josh Alexander (24) and center Matt Kingsley (23), who added 13 rebounds and blocked four shots.
Winkelman finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds for NDSU, Mike Nelson scored 12 points and Moormann finished with 10.
Woodside, who drew applause from hundreds of Drake students and supporters following the game, jumped from fourth to second on NDSU's all-time scoring list. He passed Jeff Askew and Joe Regnier and has 1,733 points in 92 career games, 80 points shy of record holder Denver TenBroek.
North Dakota State will face Georgia Southern (3-4) in the third-place game at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13. The Eagles lost 84-73 to Drake on Friday night.
