WICHITA, Kan.--Wichita State erased an early 3-0 deficit and the nationally ranked Shockers completed a four-game sweep of North Dakota State with a 9-5 victory in college baseball Sunday, March 30.
It was the 17th straight win for the Shockers, who are ranked 11th in this week's USA Today/ESPN Top 25 coaches poll and improved to 17-0 at home.
NDSU starting pitcher Matt Bowar pitched four scoreless innings before Wichita State (20-3) got on the scoreboard in the fifth. No. 9-hitting Kenny Williams Jr. and leadoff man Andy Dirks singled and doubled on the first two pitches of the inning to make it 3-1.
A leadoff walk and two one-out singles in the sixth set up a bases-loaded walk to Williams that brought Wichita State within 3-2, and Dirks singled in two more runs on the first pitch from reliever Shane Bushland to spark a four-run inning.
Meanwhile, Wichita State starter Matt Kemp and relievers Khol Nanney and Andy Womack combined to retire 18 straight NDSU hitters from the third through ninth innings before the Bison (6-11) scored two unearned runs with two outs in the ninth for the final score.
Kemp struck out five batters but did not qualify for the win with only four innings of work. Nanney fanned two of the nine batters he faced in three perfect innings and upped his record to 3-0 with the win.
North Dakota State got three of its six hits in its three-run second inning. Billy Gazich hit a one-out double to score Mike Germain with the game's first run, and a two-out single by Ricky Hefflinger moved Gazich to third before Kole Zimmerman doubled in both runners.
Ryan Langlais led off the NDSU fourth with a single before being erased on a ground out, and the Bison did not get another hit until David Williams delivered a pinch-hit single with one out in the ninth.
Bowar was responsible for five runs on eight hits with three walks and one strikeout in 5 1/3 innings. He dropped to 0-3 on the season.
North Dakota State is back on the road next weekend when the Bison play their first Summit League four-game series in Tulsa, Okla., against 10-time defending champion Oral Roberts. The first game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, April 4.
