
Bison Rally for 13-9 Win, Split Doubleheader at Western Illinois

MACOMB, Ill.--Center fielder Kyle Harrison had four RBIs and North Dakota State scored four runs in the eighth inning of a 13-9 win over Western Illinois in the second game of a Summit League baseball doubleheader Saturday, May 10. Western Illinois won the opener 6-2.
North Dakota State improved to 12-27 overall and 4-13 in The Summit League. Western Illinois is 16-27 overall and 9-9 in the league. The four-game series concludes with a noon doubleheader Sunday, May 11.
Harrison hit an RBI ground ball in the third inning for a 1-0 lead, and his three-run homer in the sixth broke a 6-6 tie. NDSU led 9-8 before Tyler Metcalf's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh tied the game.
Sebastian Miles hit a one-out single to plate NDSU's go-ahead run in the eighth, David Williams drove in two runs with a two-out single, and Williams came in to score on a wild pitch, balk and passed ball.
NDSU reliever Shane Bushland struck out four of the final five batters to improve his record to 5-2. He allowed one run on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. Bushland replaced starter Matt Bowar, who allowed eight runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Anthony Fontana and Luke Otto had three hits and two runs apiece in the Nos. 8 and 9 spots in the Bison order. Miles and Kole Zimmerman were both 2-for-5, and Zimmerman had two RBIs.
In the opener, Western Illinois pitcher Travis Tolsma (4-4) limited the Bison to five hits and struck out nine batters in a complete-game win. Tolsma allowed two runs and three walks.
Trailing 3-0, NDSU loaded the bases in the second before Tolsma got two strikeouts and a line drive out to escape scoreless. It was 5-0 when the Bison put runners at second and third with nobody out in the fifth, but Tolsma again got a pair of strikeouts and a groundout to end the threat.
North Dakota State scored twice in the eighth. Zimmerman drew a one-out walk and Shannon Ekermans was hit by a pitch before Eric Nutzhorn and Chad Berg delivered back-to-back RBI singles with two outs.
Starting pitcher Ben Mathiason went the distance for NDSU, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Mathiason's record dipped to 3-8 on the year.
