
Jackrabbits Rally Late to Earn Doubleheader Split With Bison

FARGO, N.D.--North Dakota State pitcher Matt Bowar threw a complete game for a 5-3 win in the opener, but South Dakota State scored twice in the seventh and eighth innings for a 7-5 win in the nightcap of a Summit League baseball doubleheader Friday, May 16, at Newman Outdoor Field.
North Dakota State is 14-30 overall and 6-16 in The Summit League. South Dakota State moved to 22-26 overall and 9-10 in the league. The four-game series ends with a 1 p.m. game Saturday, May 17.
Bowar threw only 93 pitches in the nine-inning game. He struck out four, walked none, and scattered eight hits for his first win in seven decisions.
Shannon Ekermans and Tim Jallen hit home runs and Sebastian Miles stroked an RBI single to give North Dakota State a 3-0 lead after five innings. Ekermans added an RBI double and Eric Nutzhorn had an RBI single in the seventh inning to cap the Bison scoring.
North Dakota State outhit South Dakota State 12-8. Nutzhorn, Ekermans, Kole Zimmerman and Ryan Langlais all had two hits. Designated hitter Erik DeJong was 3-for-4 for SDSU.
South Dakota State jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Bison starter Ryan Williams in the nightcap, but the Bison knotted the game in the bottom of the second on a two-run double into the left-field corner by David Williams.
NDSU reliever Craig Olson allowed three runs on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks in five innings. Olson hadn't pitched more than two-thirds of an inning in his previous five appearances.
Olson was in line for the win until SDSU's Craig Parry launched a two-run homer over the right-field foul pole to tie the game at 5 in the seventh.
In the eighth, Billy Stitz dropped a two-run double down the left-field line to put the Jacks ahead 7-5 against NDSU closer Shane Bushland, whose record went to 6-4 with the loss.
South Dakota State's Kirby Morsching pitched two perfect innings with two strikeouts and improved to 3-5 with the win.
Both teams had nine hits in the nightcap. Miles, Zimmerman, David Williams and Nutzhorn had two hits apiece for the Bison, and Nutzhorn finished with three RBIs.
Stitz and SDSU teammates Tim Hanigan and Nick Adams each had two hits.
