Iwanicki's Late Goal Leads Bison to 2-1 Victory Over Lamar

WACO, Texas - North Dakota State senior midfielder Becky Iwanicki scored the first game-winning goal of her career to lead the Bison to a 2-1 victory over Lamar on Sunday, Aug. 30. The Bison are now 1-1-1 this season.
The first half was evenly matched with both teams taking four shots in the first half hour of action, but Lamar took the lead in the 30th minute on a Lisa Hance goal. The Bison battled back and put pressure on the Cardinal defense in the waning minutes of the half, earning two corner kicks.
Sophomore defender Megan Dean tied the game on the final kick of the half, beating a couple defenders before chipping the ball over the goalies head. It was Dean's first career goal.
NDSU kept the pressure on in the second half. After two early offside calls, junior Quin Ryan fired a shot on goal, but Lamar goalie Jennifer Gibbs was up to the task.
In the 79th minute, Iwanicki took advantage of open space and ripped a shot from 30 yards out, sending the ball over the keeper's head and into the back of the net. It was her first goal of the season and first career game-winning goal.
Lamar came back down the field after the goal and immediately tested NDSU keeper Kalani Bertsch, but Bertsch was up to the task. Bertsch made five saves in the victory.
"It was a good weekend for us," said head coach Pete Cuadrado. "It's nice to get a win under our belts. We've showed improvement in every game so far."
The Bison return to Fargo to take on Creighton on Tuesday, Sep. 1 at 4 p.m. at the Ellig Sports Complex.
