Gaffaney Nets Overtime Game-Winner Against IUPUI

FARGO, N.D. - North Dakota State junior Michelle Gaffaney's header into the left side of the net two minutes into overtime gave the Bison a 2-1 win over IUPUI in Summit League action Sunday, Oct. 10.

The Bison have now won two straight league games and improve to 7-4-3 overall and 2-2-0 in the Summit League. IUPUI is now 6-8-0 overall and 2-2-0 in league play. NDSU also snaps a three-game losing streak against IUPUI.

Both teams had early chances as action ranged end-to-end. IUPUI struck first, taking the lead in the 28th minute after Sarah Colby slotted the ball past Bison goalie Kathy Kelsey. The redshirt freshman keeper made two saves in the first half.

The Bison knotted the game at 1-1 early in the second half as junior Abbey Stratton put a corner kick over the goalie's head and into the left side of the net.

NDSU continued to press for a winner, but IUPUI goalie Kristin Haseley made four saves in the second half. At the other end of the field, Megan Hock's close-range effort was smothered by junior goalie Kalani Bertsch, who replaced an injured Kelsey.

Late in the half, senior Marissa Wolfgram's effort from 25 yards out was tipped over the bar by Haseley and Stratton's shot moments later was saved as well.

In overtime, Gaffaney headed the ball past Haseley off a throw-in from Stratton to give the Bison the 2-1 victory. It was Gaffaney's third goal of the season and her first game-winner of the year. With the assist, Stratton has tied her career-high for assists in a season with six.

The Bison outshot the Jaguars, 15-10, in the game and tallied seven shots on goal to IUPUI's four. NDSU also held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

NDSU now hits the road for three straight games. The Bison will play at UMKC Thursday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. and Southern Utah Saturday, Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. NDSU will also play Utah Valley in non-conference action Monday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m.
