
Akron Uses Long Ball to Rout North Dakota State, 13-3

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.--Center fielder Drew Turocy and right fielder Jake Plata combined to drive in six runs to lead Akron to a 13-3 victory over North Dakota State in college baseball Sunday, March 14, at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
Akron (7-6) hit four home runs in the game, including Turocy's three-run shot in the third inning followed by Plata's solo shot that put the Zips ahead 5-1.
Akron scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings before catcher John Turk belted a two-run homer in the sixth and Plata's two-run shot in the seventh capped the Zips' scoring.
Plata was 2-for-5, Turk was 2-for-4, and shortstop Kevin Haas was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Zips.
Akron starter Andrew Brown (3-1) allowed two runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts in seven innings to pick up the win.
NDSU starter McHale Maristuen (1-1) took the loss after allowing seven runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in three-plus innings.
Five of Akron's runs went unearned as North Dakota State (3-6) committed a season-high five errors.
Shortstop Max Casper, left fielder/catcher Tyler Steen and designated hitter Eric Nutzhorn each hit 2-for-4 for the Bison. Nutzhorn had an RBI single in the fourth and a solo homer in the ninth.
North Dakota State is scheduled to play Bucknell at 10 a.m. ET on Monday, March 15, at Henley Field in Lakeland, Fla. Bucknell was 5-6 heading into a Sunday night game against UMBC.
