UMBC Wins Third Straight Over North Dakota State, 16-10

LAKELAND, Fla.--UMBC had two six-run innings and won its third straight game 16-10 over North Dakota State in college baseball Thursday, March 18, at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
North Dakota State (5-8) scored the first three runs of the game on a pair of RBI ground balls in the second inning and back-to-back two-out doubles in the third from first baseman Zach Wentz and left fielder Eric Nutzhorn.
UMBC (3-6) sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning to go ahead for good. The Retrievers got six again in the seventh highlighted by Mike Lafferty's two-run triple and a two-run homer from Mike Klukowicz on the next play that made it 15-6.
UMBC scored once more in the eighth before North Dakota State rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth. Third baseman Jay Hartman delivered an RBI single and the Bison scored on three infield ground balls.
Hartman and designated hitter Tyler Steen both hit 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead North Dakota State. Second baseman Jackson Seaman had three RBIs.
North Dakota State left 10 runners on base, including seven in scoring position.
Lafferty and Klukowicz both had two hits and four RBIs for the Retrievers, and three other UMBC players had two hits in the game.
Ed Bach (1-2) scattered 10 hits over six innings to get the win for UMBC, and Austin Drewyer pitched the final three innings for his first save of the season.
NDSU starter Ben Bruggeman (0-1) took the loss with six runs on three hits, two walks and two strikeouts in two-plus innings of work.
North Dakota State is scheduled to play New Jersey Tech at 3 p.m. ET on Friday, March 19, at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla. NJIT is 3-8 after defeating Bradley 4-2 on Wednesday.
