MINNEAPOLIS--Kyle Kingsley pitched into the seventh inning and North Dakota State got home runs from Zach Wentz and Tim Jallen to beat Minnesota 7-3 in college baseball Tuesday, March 23, at the Metrodome.
Kingsley, a freshman right-hander from Fargo, N.D., struck out three and walked none over 6 1/3 innings. He allowed three runs on nine hits and improved to 3-0 with the victory.
Langdon, N.D., sophomore Alex Chaput pitched a scoreless 1 2/3 innings before Bison closer Anthony Kliniske, a sophomore from Grafton, N.D., set the Gophers (6-14) down in order in the ninth inning.
Wentz, a sophomore from Bismarck, N.D., hit a solo home run to right-center field with two outs in the first inning to give NDSU (7-9) an early lead. It was the second homer of the year for Wentz, who finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
Minnesota tied the game in the bottom of the second inning when Nick O'Shea reached on an error and scored on a two-out single by Troy Larson.
Jallen, a senior from Bismarck, N.D., put North Dakota State back ahead with one out in the third when he homered to left field on an 0-2 pitch. It was the first homer of the year for Jallen, who finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
Justin Kline followed with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Wentz's single up the middle on a full count to give the Bison a 3-1 lead. Kline was 2-for-5.
NDSU scored twice again in the fifth. Jallen reached on an infield single, moved to second on Kline's bunt, and scored on a wild throw. Kline later scored on Eric Nutzhorn's single to left center to make it 5-1. Nutzhorn was 2-for-4.
Max Casper hit a leadoff double in the seventh and scored on Kline's single through the left side to extend NDSU's lead, and the Bison built a 7-1 lead when Kline scored on a double-play ball.
A.J Pettersen and Kyle Geason got back-to-back RBI hits in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 7-3 game, but Chaput came on to get an inning-ending double play.
Chaput allowed two walks and two hits, but he stranded three base runners and got the ball to Kliniske to start the ninth. Three ground balls to Casper at shortstop ended the game.
